Welcome to Historic Granville, Ohio New England charm in the heart of Ohio
A 2015 Update & Overview
by: Melanie Schott, Granville Township Trustee
The Granville Township Board of Trustees are responsible for cemeteries, zoning, roads, parks (leased to the GRD), the Fire Department, and the Open Space program. The Granville Township Fire Department (GTFD) serves Granville Township including the Village of Granville and Denison University. It also serves portions of McKean and Union Township under a contractual agreement. Jeff Hussey is the Granville Township Fire Chief and he can be reached at: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Granville Township Roads Superintendent is Travis Binckley (email@example.com/740.587.0229). The Roads District maintenance levy is paid by residents of the unincorporated areas and provides maintenance funds for 36.78 miles of roadway. This past winter the Township used 825 tons of salt. 2015 paving projects included work on Vill Edge, Orchard, Louise, Whipkey, Albery, Pine Village, Oak Hill Drive, Potter's Lane and portions of Silver Street and Granview.
Travis Binckley became the Zoning Inspector and Compliance Officer in 2014. Request for zoning permits and zoning questions can be directed to him at firstname.lastname@example.org. Granville Township has two zoning boards: Zoning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. In 2015, there were two Planned Unit Developments (Olde Park and Sycamore Ridge) approved in Granville Township.
Granville Township is one of the few townships in Ohio to have passed open space levies for the purpose of raising money to acquire development rights with a plan to leave land as open space. Open Space easements/properties are annually inspected and reviewed by a volunteer Land Management Committee. 2014 Open Space properties included just over 100 acres for the Wolfe property on Loudon Street and an easement for the Granville Golf Course. Trustees most recently moved forward on a conservation easement for 185 acres on North Street (661) known as the Herb Breymaier farm.
Earlier this year, the Township Trustees awarded their Single Hauler Trash Service to Local Waste Services. The program provides residential trash and recycling at the best possible rates and Local Waste Services provides trash and recycle totes at no additional cost. The transition did have some issues, but overall the Trustees are very pleased with the program.
In November 2013, the Township was authorized by majority vote to create an Electrical Aggregation Program. In May of 2015 the Village and the Township entered into a two-year agreement with Constellation Energy for purchase of electricity at $.0619 kWh. American Electric Power still handles transmission of electricity and billing. The new rate is effective until June 2017. At the end of the two-year agreement, residents will again be provided an opportunity to opt out of the program or they can terminate the agreement at any time without penalty.
Earlier this year, the Township Trustees decided to sell two six-acre lots located off of Route 37 and James Road. Properties are listed with Anderson Layman/Steve Layman.
Moving forward for 2016, there are three Township positions on the November ballot. A two-year term for Trustee, a four-year term for Trustee, and a four-year term for Township Fiscal Officer. The upcoming year will see Granville Township having to address a number of complex challenges. These include determining the location and size of a new fire station, a potential shortfall for the Township General Fund, and working collaboratively with local schools, businesses, and the Village in crafting an approach on attracting business growth consistent with the local quality of life expectations.
The Granville Township Trustees and Fiscal Officer meet the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the Township Service Complex at 1554 Columbus Road at 7:00 P.M. The public is invited to attend. Current Township Trustees are:
